The antique map ‘Westmoria Comitatvs’ (translated as ‘County of Westmorland’) was created in 1665 and depicts the region of Westmorland in the early 17th century. The United Kingdom at this time was a collection of separate kingdoms and territories, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The country was still recovering from the aftermath of the English Civil War and was ruled by King Charles II. The economy was largely agricultural, with wool and cloth production being significant industries. The map shows the central area of Westmorland, including Kendal, Staveley, and Tebay, and provides a glimpse into the geography and topography of the region during this time period.
