This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Stormaria Dvcatvs,’ which translates to the Duchy of Schleswig. Germany in the early 17th century was a patchwork of different principalities and states, each with their own rulers and laws. The Holy Roman Empire, of which much of modern-day Germany was a part, was in decline, and the Thirty Years’ War had left the region ravaged and depopulated. The map may show the various territories and borders of the Duchy of Schleswig, as well as its towns and cities, including Norderstedt, Quickborn, and Hamburg, which were located centrally.
