This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Xaintonge, avec Le Pays D’Avlnis’ which translates to ‘Saintonge, with the Country of Avlnis’. France in the early 17th Century was a country of great political and social change. The monarchy dominated the country, but there were many powerful nobles who wielded significant influence over their territories. The economy was largely agricultural, with vineyards and wheat fields being the most prominent crops. Saintes, Rochefort, and Cognac were centrally located towns that played important roles in the region’s commerce and politics. This map provides a glimpse into the geography and infrastructure of the area during this period, including roads, rivers, and towns.
