“Iaponia Regnvm” translates to “Kingdom of Japan” and is an antique map created in 1665. Japan in the early 17th century was a feudal society ruled by a shogun, with a rigid social hierarchy and a strong emphasis on honour and duty. The country was isolated from the rest of the world, with limited contact with the outside through Dutch and Chinese traders. Japan was divided into provinces, each governed by a daimyo, and had several prominent cities located centrally, including Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. The map provides a glimpse into the geography and landscape of Japan during this time period.
