This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Insulae Promontorii Viridis’, which translates to ‘Islands of the Green Cape’. It depicts the Cape Verde islands, located off the coast of West Africa, in the early 17th century. At this time, the islands were an important stopover for European ships sailing to and from the Americas, as well as a centre for the transatlantic slave trade. The islands were known for their lush vegetation and were an important source of salt, as well as a hub for trade in gold, ivory, and other commodities. The map shows the main towns of Praia, Mindelo, and São Filipe located centrally, but beyond that, it is up to interpretation what the map may reveal about this fascinating archipelago.
