Argyll and Bute

Argyll and Bute | Scalasaig, Craighouse, Port Askaig, Keills

“Ivra Insula” translates to “Isle of Islay” and is an antique map created in 1665. The United Kingdom in the early 17th century was a country in transition, with the Tudor dynasty coming to an end and the Stuart dynasty taking over. The country was also experiencing religious turmoil, with the Church of England being established and conflicts between Protestants and Catholics. Scotland and England were separate kingdoms at this time, with James VI of Scotland becoming James I of England in 1603, unifying the crowns but not the countries. The map of Islay shows the central locations of Scalasaig, Craighouse, and Port Askaig, but the details of the rest of the island are left to the imagination.
