This antique map from 1665 is titled ‘Principato Citra olim Picentia’, which translates to ‘Principality of Citra, formerly Picentia’. Italy in the early 17th century was a collection of small, independent states and principalities, each with its own unique culture and history. The map shows the central region of Italy, including the cities of Agropoli, Capaccio, and Salerno, which were important centres of trade and commerce. The landscape of Italy at this time was characterised by rolling hills, fertile valleys, and rugged coastlines, with many of the towns and cities clustered around the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. This map offers a fascinating glimpse into the political and cultural landscape of Italy at a time when the country was undergoing significant changes and transformations.
