This antique map, created in 1665 and titled ‘Abrvzzo Citra Et Vltra’, depicts the Abruzzo region of central Italy, including the provinces of Chieti, Pescara, and Cepagatti. The title translates to ‘Abruzzo on this side and beyond’, suggesting that the region was divided into two parts. In the early 17th century, Italy was a collection of independent states and territories, with the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples being the most powerful. The region of Abruzzo was known for its rugged landscape, with the Apennine Mountains running through the middle. Abruzzo was also strategically located near the Adriatic Sea and shared a border with Croatia, making it an important region for trade and defence.
