This antique map, titled ‘Paderbornensis Episcopatus Descriptio Nova’ and created in 1665, depicts a region in central Germany that includes Bad Driburg, Bad Lippspringe, and Paderborn. The title translates to ‘New Description of the Bishopric of Paderborn’. In the early 17th century, Germany was a collection of independent states and territories, each with their own ruler and laws. The Holy Roman Empire was the overarching political entity, but it was weak and fragmented. The Thirty Years’ War, which had devastated much of the region, had only recently ended, and the map reflects the ongoing efforts to rebuild and stabilise the area.
