The antique map ‘Inferioris Saxoniae Circvlvs’, created in 1665, depicts a region in northern Germany. The title translates to ‘Circle of Lower Saxony’. In the early 17th century, Germany was a collection of independent states, each with its own rulers and laws. The Holy Roman Empire was in place, but it was a loose confederation rather than a unified state. The Thirty Years’ War had just ended, leaving much of Germany devastated and depopulated. Trade and commerce were starting to recover, particularly in cities such as Hamburg, Lübeck, and Bremen, which were located centrally on the map. The map would provide insight into the various territories and boundaries within this region.
