This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Clivia Dvcatvs Et Ravenstein Dominivm’, which translates to ‘Duchy of Cleves and Lordship of Ravenstein’. Germany in the early 17th century was a patchwork of small principalities, duchies, and lordships, each with its own ruler and government. The map shows the Duchy of Cleves and the Lordship of Ravenstein, both located in the western part of Germany, close to the borders with Belgium and the Netherlands. The central locations of Goch, Kevelaer, and Kalkar are highlighted on the map, but beyond that, the map is a fascinating glimpse into the complex political and territorial landscape of Germany at the time.
