This antique map, titled ‘Descriptio Agri Civitatis Coloniensis’ and created in 1665, depicts an area in central Germany which includes the cities of Köln, Hürth and Frechen. The title translates to ‘Description of the City of Cologne’s Agricultural Land’. Germany in the early 17th century was a collection of states, each with their own rulers and political systems. The Holy Roman Empire was still in existence, and the Thirty Years’ War had just ended, leaving the country devastated. The region depicted on the map would have been primarily rural, with small towns and villages dotting the landscape. The map may show the boundaries of estates and manors, as well as the location of roads and rivers.
