This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Territorivm Metense…’ which translates to ‘Territory of Metz’. It depicts France in the early 17th century, with Metz, Charly-Oradour, and Woippy located centrally. France during this time was ruled by Louis XIII and later Louis XIV, and was a major European power. The country was divided into provinces, each with its own unique culture and economy. The economy was largely agricultural and the country was dotted with small towns and villages. The map gives a glimpse into the political and geographical landscape of France during this time period.
