Northern Europe

Northern Europe | Stockholm, Helsinki, Saint Petersburg, Oslo

This antique map, titled ‘Svecia Regnvm’, was created in 1665 and depicts the Swedish kingdom during the 17th century. ‘Svecia Regnvm’ translates to ‘Kingdom of Sweden’ in English. The map includes the present-day countries of Sweden, Aland, and parts of Russia, including Saint Petersburg. Finland, which was part of the Swedish kingdom at the time, is also shown in the map. In the early 17th century, Finland was largely agricultural and heavily forested, with a small population concentrated in coastal areas. The region was an important source of timber and iron for the Swedish empire. The map provides a glimpse into the political and geographical landscape of the region during a time of significant colonial expansion and territorial conflicts.
