This antique map, created in 1665, is titled ‘Regna Congo et Angola’ which translates to ‘Kingdoms of Congo and Angola’. At the time this map was made, Congo (Kinshasa) was a vast and powerful kingdom, with a complex social structure and economy based on agriculture, trade, and the mining of minerals such as copper and salt. The kingdom was ruled by a powerful king known as the Manikongo, who held significant political and spiritual authority. The map shows the bordering countries of Angola, Gabon, and Congo (Brazzaville), with Kinshasa, Luanda, and Matadi located centrally. The map provides a glimpse into the political and geographical landscape of the region in the early 17th century.
